ACCOUNTABILITY

TEAM

House of Play has created a community-driven accountability team to help facilitate conflict resolution and ensure accountability within the community. With the team, we intend to create a constructive, coherent system for handling cases. The team's task is, first and foremost, to ensure safety within our House of Play community. When possible we aim to achieve this through dialogue and restoring social connections instead of binary character judgments. The primary role of the teams is to:

  • Assess complaints and conflicts that may arise in and around the community.

  • Review potential members with past conflicts in other spaces.

  • Maintain Code of Conduct (CoC) community guidelines.

In case of complaints, conflicts, etc., a typical process will go through the following steps:

  1. The team becomes aware of a CoC complaint or a person with prior conflicts requesting to attend activities in House of Play or become a member.

  2. The case is presented at a team meeting, and two members volunteer as primary process facilitators.

  3. The two facilitators meet with the involved party (or parties) to understand their perspective and the situation.

  4. The facilitators present their findings to the team, which then assesses the situation and decides on the next steps or a final decision. The team aims to create consensus on decisions, but voting may be resorted to if needed.

The accountability team has various tools to manage and resolve conflicts while maintaining the safety and well-being of the community. These tools include hearing all parties involved and potentially  second-hand parties or champions who can provide additional insight. The team may ask the involved parties to initiate or participate in a conflict resolution process. Depending on the case, the team can issue warnings, place members on a trial period with periodic evaluations, or require members to follow specific rules for continued participation in the community. These rules may include having a designated companion(s), limiting involvement in certain activities, or adhering to particular interaction guidelines. In some cases, the team may exclude members from the HOP community.

The team is composed of approx. five people (internal and external members with various gender identities). Two people from House of Play’s daily leadership are participating as observers.
